Thyroid swollen...

Hey guys,

Weird question. I went to see a new endocrinologist Monday about my thyroid and she wanted to do a neck check. She told me it would feel a little like being choked. I told her to be careful as I'm a singer, but she still did it more rough than what I'm used to. She didn't touch my larynx, but I've been a bit sore (it aches) since she did it three days ago. I've still got my head voice and all my high notes. I've had this done before, but never experienced any problems afterwards. Any cause for concern?

Thanks,
AboveTenor

Re: Thyroid swollen...

I am totally clueless about this. What was wrong with your thyroid, before? And why an invasive technique that leaves you sore for days? If she has damaged you, you have reason enough for a malpractice law suit.

Anyway, sounds like you need to get ahold of Joanna Cazden. She hangs out mostly in this section of the forum. Look for any post of hers here and click on the link info.

Edited to add:

here's her profile page with her contact links, Her website and an email button. When you send her an email, it will let you know that it is sending your email addy with it and then, she could either reply to you through email or in this thread or both.

Re: Thyroid swollen...

Hi Ron,

I recently got diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, so they also usually like to check for anything abnormal by feeling around that area. I'm starting to think that in doing this, she might have aggravated it and caused my lymph nodes to swell up.

Thanks for the information! I am going to contact her now.

Re: Thyroid swollen...

Hi Dante!

Thanks for your response. It wasn't too bad, no pain really. Just some tension from the pressure she applied. I think it was more the fact of what she said (she was more rough than other doctors, it would feel like being choked) that got to me. Since then it has mostly returned to normal as the swelling and soreness have subsided. Although my voice has been a little off lately but that could be anything.

It's always good to hear about the journey you went through where you caused yourself vocal damage, yet still recovered from it. It gives me comfort that even though external laryngeal damage is possible, we are not as fragile as we think.

And thanks for the heads up. I have heard that the thyroid can swell which can create stress by pushing against the larynx leading to hoarseness.
