Vocal Booth (Acoustic Foam)

Hey Guys.

I am building a vocal booth at this time and I am considering patting it with Polyurethane Foam (eggcrate shape). I wanted Melanine but it is way beyond my budget. I was wondering if Polyurethane will do the job, and should I be concerned when it comes to health risk with Polyurethane.

Thanks
Gil

Re: Vocal Booth (Acoustic Foam)

Go with the poly and don't worry about "health risk." Shoot, one can go to what we call a hobby store (in Texas, there is a chain of stores called "Hobby Lobby.") And one could get stuff like that or even just fabric. You might be surprised to know some of my recordings consisting of draping my Minnesota Vikings sweater around the mic to deaden everything else but my singing into the mic.

My brother has made pop filters out of panty hose and an embroidery hoop.

Necessity is the mother of invention. (Which is how Frank Zappa got the name of his band. They were masters at making do with the oddest things.)

Re: Vocal Booth (Acoustic Foam)

And actually, I would be more worried about melanine. It is known to be poisonous to pet animals, when it would accidently wind up in the food. Or on purpose. Melanine has a high nitrogen signature and makes a food look like it has more animal protein than it actually has because animal-based protein has nitrogen in it (from the blood of the consumed meat.)
