Shure Super 55

...has anyone got a prof. opinion on these? Seriosuly looking into getting one, both for looks and more importantly, an upgrade from my finally broken SM58. I understand it's basically got a Beta cap in it, and I like the Beta's I've had a play around with. Basically determining whether its absolutely for me. Vocally, I tend to have growly lows (not death metal like), but more importantly I do a lot of Judas Priest like sustained high notes. Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Re: Shure Super 55

None of the Elvis mics have a reputation for good sound.

You can get your 58 refurbished (or replaced) for about $60 I think it is.

Better off getting an Audix OM3 or EV 767a or PL80a.

Re: Shure Super 55

funny thing is, i got the Super 55 in the end, and I find it much better than my SM58. Leaps and bounds better. Even preferred it to a few Beta's I had knocking around in the studio. Only gripe i have with it is if I use pedals in front of it (in this case mostly a TC Helicon Voicetone D1), I have to be very careful with the gain

Re: Shure Super 55

You came here looking for help, and now you're the expert :D
I've been looking at the 55 as well... I love the old school looking mics and might be willing to sacrifice some SQ for the looks.
I had a sm58 (until my ex broke it, still dunno how, haha) and was wondering how the sound compares? brightness etc.
I also heard that wind noise (breathing) could be a problem

Re: Shure Super 55

well personally, I've not had an issue with outside noise creeping in. basically speaking its a beta, and sounds like a beta - just looks cooler :P
