Great plugin, free until the end of this very day (8th july). So get your license!

A valid access code:
0B4968F2 (this is distributed on forums on the internet, its legal)

This is a legit download, you will own this plugin. Eventide will charge $249 for it starting from tomorrow.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

One of the most important things for home recording is a good set of reverb. Since without good rooms all we can do is close mike everything.

This is a very, very good library to have:

http://www.housecallfm.com/download-gns … xicon-480l

If you are using Reaper, its simple as using the plugin ReaVerb and loading the IR file for the desired space.

Hope its helpfull!

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Guitar amp Simulators:

Wanna record guitars, and use some decent timbre? No problem:

http://www.acmebargig.co/

On the freebies you can find some very good quality simulators.

Also, if you are more into the Metal From Hell tone:

http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com.br/2010/03/legion.html

Remember that besides the amp simulation you need a cabinet simulator too, usually IR response file, take a look here:

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Digital Audio Workstation:

First the really free options you have:

Ardour
https://ardour.org/

The project has matured a bit and should be more than enough for a home recording... However, the free option now requires you to compile the program yourself. A best option would be installing the Ubunto Studio on your system, which is a complete Linux OS aimed for professional content creation.

https://ubuntustudio.org

Ardour happens to be part of it from the go.

Zynewave Podium
http://zynewave.com/

The Free version of Podium is functional, small, and seem to be well recommended. I am not an user myself so if anyone uses it and throws a few lines, it would be great. There are limitations but not really very relevant for those looking for a way to record vocals and study at home.

Presonus Studio One Free
http://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one/download

Studio One from presonus has also a free version that can be used and will do the job. Not being able to use external plugins is probably the worse limitation, but oh well. You have compressor, eq and reverb, quite enough for study.

Quite a few options, my favorite, even though not really free:

Reaper

http://www.reaper.fm/

A low cost DAW that has unrestricted use for 60 days. In my opinion the best option if you are doing home recording for study. Has a relatively low cost and in my opinion the best support and licensing politics out there.

This one is capable of doing what most of the really expensive DAWs do, and in some ways better (the release builds are really stable, can´t recall the last time the program force closed on me, and at the times it did it was a problem with the audio drivers).

Hope it helps!

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

And after all this time of whining about it, I would finally also recommend Audacity as a DAW. Free download for it, and then you will also need to get the free download for an LAME mp3 encoder. Plus you can download plug-ins later for it, though it already comes with most of the effects plug-ins you will need.

It's way more flexible to use than I thought it was and my problems before were that I was making it harder than it really is.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Cool tnx rowns, Audacity is surely a free choice too.

VST Instrument, CV Piano:

http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=382

This is old Stuff, discontinued, but still is a great sounding piano plugin.

There isnt much to say to it, besides that you need to unpack and install using the setup option (on Windows 7 you may need to run the setup program as Administrator).

I dont know how it will behave on 64bit systems, but should work fine if your DAW can handle bridging.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Free tunning plugin, G-Snap:

http://www.gvst.co.uk/gsnap.htm

Does the same as auto-tune, although of course not with the same quality.

This is actually a great tool for studying. There is nothing better to show you how you ARE off pitch than actually forcing your vocal lines into pitch and compare what you did to how it is supposed to be. Eliminates excuses and creates an awesome reference.

I recommend :).

Edit: On the beta section there is a tool called G-Form that allows altering of formants, similar to melodyne. I did not test it, but in my opinion this particular tool in melodyne is even more powerful to make something sound decent "by force" than the pitch correction itself... I dont know the value for study since its artificial and many times unreal, but its still a free interesting one.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Beyer Dynamic Virtual Studio

http://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/v … tudio.html

This is a good solution that allows you to simulate different listenning situations, to test how your mix will behave. With a good pair of phones it can really save you some trouble.

Great to know how things will sound without having to bring it to tons of different listenning situations.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

No probs. Will do!

Shortcircuit:

http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php

This one has a bit of a learning curve to it, but, it is a very powerful tool. Its basicly a sampler/sample player. For example, if you use short circuit and these:

http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2010/06 … full-kits/

You can have some high quality drum kits using midi.

Or, bass:

http://www.turtlesounds.net/

http://rekkerd.org/?s=fashionbass

Or, a double bass:

http://patcharena.com/double-bass-sampl … fz-format/

And so on, just need to search for the samples, or even build your own.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

More guitar efx and amp simulators:

http://www.freemusiciansresource.com/VS … 1-0-2-vst/

http://www.tseaudio.com/home

Pretty much all the stuff from TSE sounds awesome. Ive sent an external link to the X50 V1 because since they went comercial with V2, they removed the free simulator from the site. (as far as I know its still free).

In any event the X30 is also an awesome simulator.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Bass instruments:

Kinda hard to find, the real cool solutions like Trilian are paid software. Still, we can get away with something useful. For example:

EVM Bassline:

http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=191

This is a weird synth that uses some real samples as basis to emulate a bass, there are various presets and, I find it actually do the job if you take the time to config it. Small, easy on the CPU, and as long as you are not looking for a super realistic bass sound (in this case the best solution is buying a bass and playing it).

Independence Free:

http://pro.magix.com/en/independence/in … .1013.html

This is a more elaborate solution, maybe a better choice, plus you get more instruments beside the bass. I found the bass samples nice, not an ultimate solution, but works.

On this particular one, if anyone has a better solution, please let us know. Free bass samples are kinda hard to come across.

BTW, when programming bass lines in general, watch out the velocity on the midi notes. Most of the time, specially in pop, you DONT want the higher dynamics. Low velocities usually will fit better and sound more realistic.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Free Channel Stripe with tube saturation:

http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/200 … ease-info/

This one is handy, similar to the Eventide channel stripe I openned the thread with. The EQ is very functional and the tube saturation works quite well.

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Drums:

Ok, this one is a bit complicated, but, from what I heard from this solution, well worth it and even better than some paid software:

First, get Kontakt 5 Player (its free):

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/pr … -download/

Then, get this one:

http://de-de.sennheiser.com/drummica

DrumMic´A

Its a free sample instrument for Kontakt that works on the Player version, and its really awesome. Has lots of ways to config your drums, even mic placement, and comes with preset MIDI parts (which I think MDEW was asking around on another thread).

You will probably need google translator to use the site, but its worth the trouble.

Hope its helpful!

Re: Cool FREE Stuff

Ok, this is not free, but since this helped me a lot a while back, I will share it here too:

http://www.xlnaudio.com/products

They have very good virtual instruments at an already fair price (in my opinion), and they are dealing on 1/2 the price until the end of november.

I like addictive drums a lot, great kit sounds and it has a very cool midi library too. Hope it helps!
